Will Elon Musk Become US President? Trump Explains Why It’s “Not Happening”

Amid rising speculation about Elon Musk’s political ambitions, US President-elect Donald Trump has firmly dismissed the idea of the billionaire becoming the nation’s president, citing constitutional restrictions. Speaking at a Republican conference in Phoenix, Arizona, Trump addressed rumours fueled by Musk’s growing influence in the incoming administration. “No, he is not taking the presidency. That is not happening,” Trump declared, as reported by NBC News.

Constitutional Roadblock

The debate over Musk’s eligibility stems from his South African origins. The US Constitution mandates that only natural-born citizens are eligible to hold the presidency. “No, he’s not going to be president, that I can tell you. And I’m safe. You know why he can’t be? He wasn’t born in this country,” Trump asserted.

Musk, the world’s richest person, was born in Pretoria, South Africa, and later became a naturalized US citizen. Despite this, the constitutional requirement bars him from ascending to the presidency, effectively quelling any speculation of a political future at the highest level.

A Role of Influence: Leading the Department of Government Efficiency

While Musk cannot hold the presidency, his role in the incoming administration is significant. Trump has appointed Musk to co-lead the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), alongside entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy. This advisory panel, which is not an official government agency, aims to reduce government spending, cut federal regulations, and streamline the federal workforce.

Trump praised Musk’s contributions, emphasizing the need for “smart people” in his administration. “Elon’s done an amazing job. It’s nice to have smart people that we can rely upon. Don’t we want that? He’s done a great job,” Trump said.

Democratic Criticism and “President Musk” Speculation

The appointment has not been without controversy. Democrats have mocked Musk’s outsized role, referring to him as “President Musk” and accusing him of wielding undue influence in Trump’s administration. The rumors gained momentum last week when Musk, alongside Trump, intervened to block a government funding bill in Congress, averting a potential government shutdown just days before Christmas.

While Congress eventually reached a compromise, Democrats accused Musk of undermining legislative processes and “calling the shots” in the incoming administration. Trump dismissed these accusations as “another hoax” perpetuated by his opponents.

Musk’s Support for Trump

Musk has been one of Trump’s most prominent supporters, endorsing him in July following an assassination attempt on the Republican leader during a rally in Pennsylvania. The billionaire’s involvement in the administration is seen by some as a reward for his loyalty and strategic support during the presidential campaign.

Trump Set to Take Office

At 78, Trump is poised to become the oldest elected president when he takes office on January 20, 2025. Despite the controversy surrounding Musk’s role, Trump remains confident in his team and their ability to deliver on his vision for a leaner, more efficient government.

As the incoming administration prepares to take charge, the partnership between Trump and Musk will likely continue to draw attention. For now, however, Trump’s message is clear: Elon Musk may have a pivotal role in shaping the administration’s policies, but the presidency is out of reach.
