Mumbai: After eluding capture for over a decade, the long arm of the law finally caught up with two individuals who were arrested on Tuesday for their alleged involvement in a daring heist that saw them absconding with ₹78 lakh in cash destined for deposit at an ATM kiosk in Kandivali back on September 12, 2012. The culprits, identified as Arun Waghmare, 38, and Satish Aghade, 38, were apprehended in separate operations, marking the end of their 11-year run from justice.

According to authorities, the elaborate scheme was orchestrated by Waghmare, an employee of Writer Safeguard, a company responsible for cash loading services at ATMs. Aghade, also employed by the same firm, played a key role in executing the robbery.9 months after its top cop was shunted out, why UP Police is still without a permanent DGP

Recalling the events of that fateful day, an officer shared, “On the day of the heist, five employees, including Waghmare and Aghade, departed from their office in Kamala Mills Compound, Lower Parel, in a modified Mahindra Bolero jeep at around 1 pm. The vehicle was also accompanied by two armed security guards.”

Upon arriving at an HDFC bank ATM kiosk on SV Road in Kandivali (West) at approximately 2:30 pm, three employees disembarked the vehicle with ₹44 lakh in cash, intending to deposit it into the machine. Meanwhile, one of the security guards and Waghmare remained inside the jeep. “A few minutes later, the guard also exited the vehicle to fetch water. Seizing the opportunity, Waghmare, who had only recently joined the company, capitalized on the situation and made off with the vehicle, along with the ₹78-lakh cash that was stored inside,” explained the officer.

As his colleagues attempted to reach Waghmare, they discovered that his phone had been switched off. They promptly alerted the police control room, while the guards informed authorities that the vehicle was equipped with a GPS tracking system.

“After tracing the GPS signal, we located the abandoned vehicle near Nirmala College on MG Road in Kandivali (West). Unfortunately, Waghmare had already absconded with the stolen money. We filed robbery charges against Waghmare and had been tirelessly tracking him ever since,” disclosed the officer.

It was revealed that the ill-gotten gains were squandered by the duo within a span of two years. “They used the stolen funds to purchase land, houses, and even cars in their village. However, their fortune quickly evaporated,” shared Deepshikha Ware, senior police inspector from Kandivali Police Station.

The recent breakthrough in the case has brought closure to the prolonged investigation, offering a glimmer of justice for the victims and a reminder that the long arm of the law will eventually catch up with those who engage in criminal activities. The diligent efforts of law enforcement serve as a testament to their unwavering commitment to maintaining law and order within society.
