Rajasthan Borewell Rescue Turns Into Tragedy: Three-Year-Old Chetna Declared Dead After 10-Day Rescue Effort

A Rajasthan borewell rescue operation turned into tragedy. It has left a family in deep grief after three-year-old Chetna, who fell into a 700-foot borewell in Kotputli, was declared dead following a prolonged 10-day rescue operation. The incident, which unfolded over ten harrowing days, has raised serious questions about the efficiency of local authorities and rescue protocols.

Rescue Operation Faced Delays

Chetna fell into the borewell on December 23 while playing outside. Her cries alerted her family, who immediately sought help. National and state disaster relief teams arrived at the scene to initiate the rescue operation, supplying oxygen through a pipe to keep her alive. However, attempts to pull her out using an iron ring and rope failed.

To intensify efforts, a piling machine was brought in to dig a parallel tunnel, followed by a 100-tonne crane to replace the initial 50-tonne equipment. Unfortunately, heavy rains on Friday hampered the digging process, further delaying the operation.

Parents Alleged Negligence

Chetna’s parents, devastated by the tragedy, have accused local authorities of negligence, stating that delays in rescue efforts contributed to her deteriorating condition. Her mother, Dhole Devi, had repeatedly urged officials to expedite the operation, expressing anguish over the prolonged ordeal.

Past Incidents Highlight Dangers Of Open Borewells

This tragedy is a grim reminder of several past incidents across India where children have fallen into uncovered borewells. Despite repeated warnings and guidelines issued by the Supreme Court to seal unused borewells, many remain exposed, posing significant dangers to unsuspecting children.

As Chetna’s family mourns their irreparable loss, this incident has reignited calls for stricter implementation of borewell safety measures to prevent such heart-wrenching tragedies in the future.
