At least nine people, including eight Dantewada District Reserve Guard (DRG) jawans, were killed in a devastating Naxal attack in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur. The tragedy unfolded when an IED blast targeted their vehicle as they returned from a joint operation involving Dantewada, Narayanpur, and Bijapur.
“Nine people – eight Dantewada DRG jawans and one driver, lost their lives after their vehicle was blown up by Naxals through an IED blast, in Bijapur,” said IG Bastar. The incident highlights the persistent threat posed by Naxalites in the region, despite intensified counterinsurgency operations by security forces.
Recent Clashes With Naxal Forces
The attack comes shortly after a major encounter between security forces and Naxalites in Bastar. In this operation, five ultras were neutralized, and a DRG head constable also lost his life. Such incidents underline the ongoing confrontations between security personnel and insurgent groups in Chhattisgarh.
Deputy Chief Minister Arun Sao condemned the attack, calling it a “cowardly action” driven by “desperation and disappointment” as Naxalites face mounting pressure from security forces. He emphasized that the sacrifice of the jawans would not be in vain. Former Chief Minister Raman Singh echoed these sentiments, reaffirming the government’s commitment to eliminating the Naxal menace.
Government’s Efforts To Eradicate Naxalism
The central government has set a deadline of March 2026 to eradicate Naxalism. Union Home Minister Amit Shah, during his recent visit to Chhattisgarh, highlighted significant progress in this direction. Over the past year, security forces have killed 287 Naxals, arrested 1,000, and witnessed 837 surrenders.
In addition to military operations, the Chhattisgarh government has implemented initiatives to encourage Naxal surrenders. These include rehabilitation programs and reintegration efforts to help insurgents transition into society. Community Policing Programmes in Naxal-affected areas aim to foster trust between law enforcement and local communities, creating a cooperative environment to counter insurgency.
Historical Context And Challenges
Chhattisgarh has long been a hotspot for Naxal activity, with insurgents targeting infrastructure, security forces, and civilians to disrupt state administration. The region’s dense forests and challenging terrain provide a strategic advantage to Naxals. However, coordinated efforts by the state and central governments, including infrastructural development and community engagement, have started to weaken the insurgency.
This latest attack serves as a grim reminder of the challenges ahead in the fight against Naxalism. It underscores the need for sustained efforts and comprehensive strategies to bring peace and stability to affected regions.
