Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna awards have been announced, with Manu Bhaker, D Gukesh, Harmanpreet Singh, and Praveen Kumar being honoured with the prestigious Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna for 2024. The announcement by the Press Information Bureau (PIB) highlights the achievements of these exceptional athletes who brought glory to the nation with their outstanding performances.
Manu Bhaker, a double medallist at the Paris Olympics 2024, became the first Indian to win two Olympic medals post-independence. The 22-year-old secured bronze in the 10m air pistol and the 10m air pistol mixed team events, making her the first Indian woman shooter to achieve this feat. Her partner, Sarabjot Singh, has also been nominated for the Arjuna Award this year.
D Gukesh made history as the youngest chess world champion at just 18 years old, a remarkable milestone for Indian chess. Harmanpreet Singh, the captain of the Indian men’s hockey team, led his squad to their second consecutive bronze medal at the Paris Olympics. Meanwhile, Praveen Kumar clinched a gold medal in men’s high jump at the Paralympics with a record-breaking 2.08 meters.
The Sports Ministry has also recognized 32 athletes for the Arjuna Awards, including 17 para-athletes. Lifetime achievement awards under the Arjuna category were conferred on Sucha Singh (Athletics) and Murlikant Rajaram Petkar (Para-Swimming) for their unparalleled contributions to Indian sports.
The award ceremony, set to be held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on January 17, 2025, will honor these athletes for their dedication and excellence in sports. These recognitions underscore India’s growing prowess across diverse disciplines, from shooting and chess to hockey and athletics.
