The year 2020 is one of the most awaited years for all smartphone companies as it will witness the 5G revolution with advanced AI applications. Many chip making companies are getting ready to disclose their latest innovation in 5G.

Qualcomm Inc at its Snapdragon Tech Summit held in Hawaii last week announced about its newest chipsets for a smartphone that supports 5G. Taiwanese chip-maker MediaTek and Korea’s Samsung have also revealed their chips that support 5G connectivity. But these chipsets have much more to offer than faster internet.

Benefits of 5G chipsets other than faster internet

Improved cameras

The Snapdragon 865 is a Qualcomm’s flagship chipset to be launched in 2020 supports sensors up to 200MP resolution. The company said in Hawaii that it expects such resolution high cameras in smartphones in 2020. Another benefit is chipset can record videos in 8K resolution which is double the resolution with which the existing cameras can record videos.

Companies like Xiaomi have already started selling phones with camera 108MP. But the smartphone makers can take full advantage of sensors and can enable the new feature only if high-resolution cameras on the processor itself.

Likewise, Samsung’s Exynos 990 chipset supports cameras up to 108 MP resolution whereas Huawei’s Kirin 990 chipset is known to focus on other features like noise reduction in photos.

More AI apps

AI performance of chipset is quite difficult to measure still every chipmaker has touted its performances over the last few years. It is said that Samsung’s and Qualcomm’s premier chips will support 10 and 15 trillion operations per second and Huawei also claimed that there will be improvements in AI processing capabilities of the company’s Kirin 990 chip.

An example of high performance with efficient processing is Qualcomm showed a live demo of speech being transcribed in two languages in real-time by its chipset.

New apps through 5 G

5G technologies will do more for a smartphone than just fast internet. The emphasis is on 5G along with AI which those chips will apply for software enhancements According to Qualcomm, 5G is key for new form factors in smartphones as well.

Next year the market will have more affordable smartphones than now. Qualcomm announced both the chipsets Snapdragon 865 and Snapdragon 765/765G are meant for slightly affordable phones. It also announced that it will bring 5G support down to cheaper phones by bringing down Snapdragon 600 series by the end of 2020.

“Qualcomm’s goal is to drive ‘real 5G’ down the price curve in all markets. By real 5G, Qualcomm believes Sub6, mmWave, DSS (Dynamic Spectrum Sharing), and SA (Standalone) all need to be supported,” wrote Jeff Fieldhack, research director at Counterpoint Research in his blog post about Qualcomm’s announcements.

Quantum has already announced the world’s first extended reality (XR) platform with support for 5G connectivity last week.

The company also claims that XR2’s CPU and GPU performance are double than the earlier version and AI processing speeds have increased by 11 times. Along with that there is also a 6x increase in video resolution support and 4x blow in the video bandwidth the chipset supports.
