Indian Cricket Legend Calls Out Violation of National Flag Rules
Indian cricket icon Sunil Gavaskar expressed his anger during the Perth Test between India and Australia after noticing a breach of protocol regarding the Indian flag. While commentating on Day 3 of the match, Gavaskar observed Indian fans, identified as members of the “Bharat Army,” holding flags with their group’s name inscribed on them. The sight left Gavaskar visibly upset, prompting him to deliver a fiery on-air reprimand. According to the cricket legend, this act not only violated national flag regulations but also disrespected its sanctity.
“I know that in India it’s not accepted. I don’t think these [fans] are really Indians. I’m not too sure how many of them have Indian passports, so they probably don’t understand the value, the relevance, the importance of the Indian flag,” Gavaskar stated.
National Flag Violations Highlighted
Gavaskar referred to the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971, which clearly prohibits any form of lettering or inscriptions on the Indian flag. Section 2 of the Act specifically mentions that “there shall be no lettering upon the national flag.” It further stipulates that the flag cannot be used as a part of any costume, uniform, or accessory worn below the waist, nor can it be embroidered or printed on items like cushions, handkerchiefs, or undergarments.
The veteran cricketer’s frustration was evident as he reminded fans of the importance of adhering to these rules. He emphasized that such violations tarnish the dignity of the tricolor and urged supporters to be mindful of its significance.
Gavaskar’s Appeal to Bharat Army
Gavaskar’s criticism wasn’t aimed at the support provided by the Bharat Army—a globally recognized group of passionate Indian cricket fans—but at their oversight in using the national flag inappropriately. While he appreciated their dedication, he strongly advised against repeating such mistakes.
“All Indians, including me, are very grateful for the support that they bring to the Indian cricket team wherever the Indian cricket team is playing. We are really, really thankful and grateful for that, but I would request them not to have their group’s name on the Indian flag,” Gavaskar said during the broadcast.
He urged the group to create their own unique flag to represent their identity, offering his full endorsement and even promising to wear the new design himself. “Design a new flag of your own. If you design a new flag of your own, I will myself wear it with great pleasure,” he added.
Importance of Respecting National Symbols
The incident sparked a broader conversation about the need to respect national symbols, especially in international settings where such gestures represent the country’s image. Gavaskar highlighted the need for awareness among fans about the laws governing the use of the national flag and called for stricter adherence to these protocols.
The Bharat Army, known for its enthusiastic presence at cricket matches worldwide, has often been credited with bringing vibrant energy to stadiums. However, Gavaskar’s remarks served as a reminder that enthusiasm must not come at the expense of national pride.
Gavaskar’s Stern Message and the Way Forward
This is not the first time Gavaskar has spoken out against violations of flag etiquette. As a revered figure in Indian cricket, his comments carry significant weight and reflect the sentiments of many Indians who take immense pride in their national flag.
The former cricketer’s remarks underline the responsibility of fans to represent their country respectfully, especially on global platforms. His call for a unique flag for fan groups like the Bharat Army is a constructive solution that allows them to maintain their identity without breaching flag protocols.
