Baba Ramdev’s Patanjali may bid for the title sponsorship in the light of BCCI’s expired 2020 agreement with Chinese company Vivo

  • Patanjali Ayurved is preparing a proposal to bid for IPL
  • BCCI is looking to be the new title sponsor for this year

The anti-China sentiment remains in the country after the border dispute in the Galvan Valley of Ladakh. In the light of this, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has broken ties with the Chinese smartphone company Vivo for the title sponsorship of IPL 2020. Now news is coming forward that Patanjali Ayurved, a company of yoga guru Baba Ramdev, may bid for the sponsorship title of IPL 2020.

Patanjali wants to reach global marketing platform

Talking to PTI, Patanjali spokesperson, SK Tijarawala, said that ‘we want to take the Patanjali brand to the global marketing platform. For this, we are considering IPL title sponsorship this year”.

On 6 August, Vivo was removed from the title sponsorship of IPL 2020 after the anti-China sentiment in the country. Since then, BCCI is looking for a new IPL title sponsor for this year. BCCI may give 50% discount for IPL title sponsorship this year.

BCCI expects to earn Rs 300 crore this year from the title sponsorship. According to Tijarawala, BCCI is likely to bring an Expression of Interest (EOI) on Monday for the title sponsorship. Patanjali Ayurved will submit EOI on August 14.

Vivo used to pay 440 crore rupees every year to BCCI

Vivo and BCCI had a 5-year agreement in 2018 regarding IPL title sponsorship. Under this, Vivo had agreed to pay Rs 440 crore to BCCI every year for IPL title sponsorship. According to a report, Vivo may return as title sponsorship for IPL 2021.

IPL 2020 to be held in UAE

Due to coronavirus infection, all the activities including sports are stalled all over the world. India is also not untouched by this. Due to this, the IPL 2020 will be played in the UAE. This year, the IPL will be start from September 19 and end on November 10.

Patanjali has also been in the media recently for their claims regarding Coronil. They developed the medicine coronil, and promoted it as the cure for coronavirus. They later had to retract these statements and market the medicine as a immunity booster. All this media attention may ultimately prove to be useful in the IPL bid.  Pajanjali has been getting a lot of media coverage, which can be very beneficial in this context.

All of this comes in the light of the recent border tensions between India and China. People all across the country have decided to boycott Chinese products and opt for ‘Made in India’ products. Such times will most definitely not be suitable for a sponsorship from a Chinese brand.

Due to corona, IPL this year will be held in UAE. It is still left to see if Patanjali will win the bid or some other company will beat them to it.
