Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Harjinder Singh Dhami on Wednesday underwent a religious punishment pronounced by the Panj Pyare (Five Beloveds) for allegedly making derogatory remarks against his predecessor, Bibi Jagir Kaur. This disciplinary action, a significant moment in Sikh ethics, underscores the importance of humility, respect, and accountability within the community.
What Led to the Punishment?
The controversy erupted after an audio recording, allegedly of Dhami using offensive language during a telephonic conversation with a media person, surfaced on social media. The recording prompted the Punjab State Commission for Women to take suo-motu cognizance of the matter. The Commission summoned Dhami and demanded an explanation, but his apology was deemed insufficient.
Following the incident, Bibi Jagir Kaur, the former SGPC president, appeared before the Commission and called for legal action against Dhami. “If he admitted to the mistake in writing, action should be taken as per law. He should not be allowed to go scot-free,” Kaur asserted.
Religious Punishment Announced by Panj Pyare
On Wednesday, Dhami met the Akal Takht Jathedar at the Golden Temple complex in Amritsar and later presented himself before the Panj Pyare. After deliberation, the Panj Pyare directed Dhami to undergo a series of Seva (voluntary service) and prayers as atonement for his actions.
The prescribed punishment included:
- Performing one hour of service at the Joda Ghar (shoe storage area).
- Cleaning utensils for an hour in the Langar Hall.
- Reciting the Panj Japji Sahib Path (prayers).
Dhami accepted the punishment and immediately began fulfilling the directives.
Punjab Women’s Commission Involvement
The Punjab State Commission for Women, led by Chairperson Raj Lali Gill, was the first to address the issue publicly. The Commission refused to accept Dhami’s verbal and written apologies, citing the severity of his alleged remarks.
“The Commission took suo-motu cognizance of an audio recording circulating on social media, where Dhami is purportedly heard using demeaning language. Such behavior is unacceptable, especially from a person holding a prominent position,” said Gill.
The Commission’s intervention highlighted the growing emphasis on holding public figures accountable for their actions, especially when they violate ethical and moral standards.
Bibi Jagir Kaur’s Reaction
Bibi Jagir Kaur, a seasoned leader in Sikh politics, expressed dissatisfaction with the resolution of the matter. While the Panj Pyare’s decision aligns with Sikh traditions, Kaur argued that Dhami should also face legal consequences.
“If he admitted his mistake, legal action should follow. Apologies alone are not enough to address the harm caused,” Kaur said, emphasizing the need for stricter measures against misconduct.
A Lesson in Accountability and Sikh Ethics
The disciplinary action against SGPC chief Harjinder Singh Dhami reflects the intersection of Sikh ethics and modern accountability. While the Panj Pyare’s directives aim to restore moral balance, the involvement of the Punjab State Women’s Commission underscores the need for systemic checks on public officials.
As the SGPC navigates this sensitive issue, the incident serves as a pivotal moment for reinforcing respect, dignity, and responsibility within the Sikh community. Whether through religious or legal means, such actions ensure that those in positions of power remain answerable to the principles they are meant to uphold.
