RJD's Lalu Prasad Backs Mamata Banerjee For INDIA Bloc Leadership

RJD’s Lalu Prasad has stirred political waters by backing West Bengal chief minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Mamata Banerjee for the leadership of the Opposition’s INDIA bloc. This endorsement comes after Banerjee expressed her willingness to lead the coalition, sparking a wave of reactions across alliance leaders.

Lalu Prasad, the Rashtriya Janata Dal chief and former Union minister, voiced strong support, asserting that Banerjee should be entrusted with the bloc’s leadership, dismissing objections from Congress as irrelevant. “Mamata Banerjee should be allowed to head the INDIA bloc,” he stated, adding, “The Congress’s opposition will not make any difference.”

Alliance Leaders React To Mamata Banerjee’s Leadership Proposal

Leaders within the INDIA alliance have expressed mixed reactions to Mamata Banerjee’s bid. Tejashwi Yadav, senior RJD leader and son of Lalu Prasad, indicated openness to the idea, emphasizing the need for consensus. “No objection to any senior leader, including Mamata Banerjee, leading the coalition. The decision must be unanimous,” he said.

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi also highlighted Banerjee’s contributions and deemed her offer significant. She remarked, “Her proposal is important, recognizing her historical role. Decisions will be made collectively by the alliance.”

Priyanka Chaturvedi Confident In Mamata Banerjee’s Leadership

Chaturvedi lauded Banerjee for her efforts in combating misinformation campaigns in West Bengal, expressing confidence in her ability to lead the INDIA bloc effectively. “Despite being in the opposition, she has prevented the spread of fake news and misinformation by BJP in West Bengal. If given the leadership role, she will undoubtedly strengthen the alliance,” Chaturvedi told ANI.

Mamata Banerjee’s Readiness To Lead

On Friday, Mamata Banerjee voiced dissatisfaction with the current functioning of the INDIA bloc, signaling her willingness to assume leadership. Speaking to News 18 Bangla, Banerjee said, “I had formed the INDIA bloc, now it is up to those leading it to manage. If they can’t run the show, what can I do? I am capable of handling both responsibilities as CM and bloc leader.”

This bold declaration underscores her readiness to steer the opposition front while maintaining her role as West Bengal’s chief minister.

Shiv Sena’s Sanjay Raut Weighs In

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut addressed differing opinions within the bloc, including those supporting Banerjee’s leadership. He stated, “No one questions Rahul Gandhi’s leadership. However, allies like TMC, Lalu Prasad Yadav, or Akhilesh Yadav must be heard. If new ideas can strengthen the INDIA alliance, they should be considered.”

Raut underscored the collective formation of the INDIA alliance and the importance of listening to member parties to maintain unity.

NCP And BJP’s Perspectives

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MP Supriya Sule supported Banerjee’s potential expanded role, calling her an integral part of the alliance. “We would be happy if TMC chief Mamata Banerjee takes on a greater role,” Sule stated, highlighting her significance within the coalition.

On the other hand, BJP national general secretary Tarun Chugh criticized the alliance for a lack of coherence, claiming it is “burdened by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi” and plagued by internal conflicts. Chugh’s remarks came in response to Banerjee’s leadership bid, reflecting BJP’s skepticism towards the bloc’s stability.
