A special court in Delhi has given a big blow to Congress leader P Chidambaram. The Rouse Avenue court has allowed the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to arrest and interrogate former Finance Minister P Chidambaram in the INX Media money laundering case. The court allowed the ED to interrogate P Chidambaram for 30 minutes. The ED will interrogate him in Delhi’s Tihar Jail tomorrow.
On the demand of arrest and interrogation of Chidambaram in the court itself, the court told the ED that if you want to arrest him (P Chidambaram) in public and question him, it will not be dignified.
The court issued a production warrant on the ED’s plea and directed Chidambaram to appear. Special CBI Judge Ajay Kumar Kuhar had reserved the verdict till 4 pm on Tuesday after hearing the arguments of ED and the defense.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta had asked the court for permission to arrest Chidam baram, stating that money laundering in the INX case is different from the CBI case and that he needs to be arrested and questioned.
The Supreme Court has also given its consent on this matter. On the other hand, opposing the ED’s plea, senior advocate Kapil Sibal had said that the entire case is one and the entire ED case is based on the CBI’s FIR.
Sibal had said, CBI has questioned his client in this case. Chidam baram was sent to judicial custody only after the agency has questioned him. Therefore ED should not remand him again.
