The much-awaited Vande Bharat Sleeper Train is set to launch this month, promising enhanced comfort for passengers. However, weight modifications have reduced its top speed to 130 km/h, falling short of the initially expected 180 km/h.
Modifications Leading To Weight Increase
The sleeper version of the Vande Bharat train has undergone significant changes, including the addition of sleeper berths and expanded water storage capacity. These modifications aim to improve the passenger experience but have resulted in an increase in the train’s overall weight.
According to officials from the Perambur Integral Coach Factory (ICF), the added weight prevents the train from achieving its initially projected speed range of 130-180 km/h. The current maximum speed has been capped at 130 km/h to ensure operational safety and efficiency.
Rigorous Testing And Certification Process
Before the train can commence operations, it must pass a series of stringent tests overseen by the Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO). These tests include loading the coaches with sandbags to simulate passenger weight.
Once testing is completed, the Railway Safety Commissioner will conduct a trial run at the maximum speed to ensure the train’s reliability. Only after clearing these evaluations will the sleeper train be handed over to Indian Railways for regular service.
Manufacturing By Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML)
The sleeper coaches are being manufactured by Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML), with the first set of coaches delivered to ICF on October 4, 2024. The project is part of a 2023 contract between ICF and BEML to produce 10 Vande Bharat trains, each comprising 16 coaches.
ICF is currently completing the necessary formalities for the official launch. This development marks a significant milestone in India’s efforts to modernize its rail infrastructure and improve long-distance travel comfort.
While the speed limitation may seem like a setback, the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train represents a major step forward for Indian Railways, blending luxury with efficiency. Future iterations of the train are expected to address the speed concerns, further enhancing the travel experience for passengers.
