Mahakumbh Mela 2025, celebrated as the largest gathering on Earth, began on Monday with a spectacular display of devotion and spirituality. The 45-day event in Prayagraj commenced on the auspicious occasion of Paush Purnima, with an estimated 1.6 crore devotees taking a holy dip at the sacred confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers by 4 PM.
The mega religious congregation, spanning 4,000 hectares, is expected to attract millions of devotees, saints, and tourists from around the world, reflecting the cultural and spiritual richness of India. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath described the event as a rare opportunity for global spiritual unity.
Shahi Snan Marks The Beginning Of Mahakumbh 2025
The event commenced with the ‘Shahi Snan’ (royal bath) on Paush Purnima, marking the first major bathing festival of the Mahakumbh. This year, the celestial alignment accompanying the ritual is said to occur once every 144 years, adding to the spiritual significance of the occasion.
The upcoming major bathing festivals include Makar Sankranti on January 14, Mauni Amavasya on January 29, and Basant Panchami on February 3. The Mahakumbh will conclude on February 26.
Safety And Security Measures In Place
To ensure the safety of the massive crowd, stringent security arrangements have been made. Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Uttar Pradesh Police’s water police units have been deployed at key locations across the Mela area. Authorities have implemented measures to manage the large influx of pilgrims, including crowd control systems and real-time monitoring.
The fair administration has also introduced QR code-based systems, with over 50,000 QR codes installed on electricity poles across 25 sectors of the Mela area. These codes help pilgrims navigate the vast grounds and report electricity-related issues efficiently.
Facilities For Pilgrims And Tourists
The Uttar Pradesh government has invested approximately ₹7,000 crore in preparing for Mahakumbh 2025. Key initiatives include:
- Improved Infrastructure: Roads, sanitation, and public amenities have been upgraded across Prayagraj and the Mela area.
- Medical Support: Three hospitals have been established along NH-19 in Bhadohi district to cater to devotees. These facilities will be fully operational by January 14.
- Helicopter Rides: To offer a unique perspective of the Mahakumbh, helicopter joyrides have been introduced at a reduced cost of ₹1,296 per person for a 7–8 minute aerial tour.
Namami Gange Yagya And Environmental Initiatives
Ahead of the Mahakumbh, the Namami Gange team organized a grand yagya at the Sangam to pledge the preservation of Ganga’s purity. Over 200 Ganga Sevadoots and thousands of participants joined the initiative, emphasizing the importance of environmental conservation.
The event also highlighted the contribution of India’s youth to the Ganga Swachhata Abhiyaan (Clean Ganga Mission), reinforcing the spiritual and ecological significance of the river.
Weather And Air Quality Updates
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has launched a dedicated webpage for Mahakumbh, providing hourly, three-hourly, and weekly forecasts for Prayagraj and nearby cities like Ayodhya, Lucknow, and Varanasi. The forecast includes data on temperature, wind chill, wind speed, humidity, and air quality.
Monday’s minimum temperature was recorded at 7°C, with the maximum at 19°C. The IMD predicts similar weather patterns for the week ahead, ensuring comfortable conditions for pilgrims.
The air quality in Prayagraj has been classified as “moderate,” offering a significant improvement from Delhi’s often poor AQI levels.
