In a groundbreaking move, 44 transgender individuals have been appointed as traffic police assistants in Hyderabad, marking a significant step towards inclusivity. This initiative, possibly the first of its kind globally, is part of Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy’s vision is to recognise the transgender community and ensure their inclusion in mainstream society. The selections were made after 58 contenders underwent a rigorous qualifying process that included 800-meter runs, high jumps, and long jump competitions at the Goshamahal police stadium on Wednesday.
Hyderabad Police Commissioner C.V. Anand announced that appointment orders for these newly recruited traffic assistants had been issued. The social welfare department provided a list of eligible candidates, focusing on those between the ages of 18 and 40 who had at least completed their Secondary School Certificate (SSC). Commissioner Anand emphasized the significance of this initiative by holding key meetings with transgender representatives, discussing their roles, and issuing orders following their successful performance in the endurance tests.
“Each of you should be a role model for your community and bring a good name to the state police department,” said Anand, addressing the newly appointed recruits. The selection process was overseen by a recruitment committee led by DCP South West, the Home Guard Commandant, and additional DCP CAR, with participation from senior officials, including Anitha Ramachandran, Ravi Gupta, and P. Vishwaprasad, additional CP (traffic). This recruitment sets a new precedent, offering hope and recognition to the transgender community.
