Actor Prateik Babbar, known for memorable performances in films like Dhobi Ghat and Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na, recently shared a deeply personal revelation about his early battle with substance abuse. To dispel common assumptions, Prateik clarified that his drug use began long before he entered the film industry. Despite being part of a Bollywood family, his experiences with addiction stemmed from a challenging childhood, not from fame or the pressures of the entertainment world.

Prateik discussed how his struggles began as early as age 13, surprising those who assumed he only encountered such issues after stepping into Bollywood. “People think, ‘Oh, he entered films, got fame and money, and then started taking drugs.’ No, that’s not true,” Prateik stated. “I started using drugs before I even turned thirteen, and yes, it was terrifying. It wasn’t because of the film industry.”

Prateik’s journey has been marked by both personal loss and fame. Born to the celebrated actress Smita Patil, who passed away shortly after his birth, and raised by his father, actor-politician Raj Babbar, Prateik’s early years were shaped by both the glamour of Bollywood and profound personal tragedy. Despite these connections to the film world, he asserts that his struggles were influenced more by a complicated family environment than by his career.

“Unfortunately, I had a different kind of upbringing, and my family situation was a bit complicated,” he shared. “That’s why I started using drugs. It’s not fame or money that led me to it—I had already started by then.” For Prateik, drug use became a means of coping with unresolved trauma from his early years, rather than a side effect of celebrity status.

Opening up about his past, Prateik highlighted the lasting impact that trauma can have on mental health. Many who face similar experiences often resort to self-destructive coping mechanisms, something he understands all too well. He explained, “As long as that trauma isn’t released, it will continue to impact relationships and other areas of life. But there comes a time when you have to work to make things better, which I’ve been doing for many years.” His words underscore the resilience and effort he has put into his recovery journey, a process that continues to this day.

Prateik reflected on the lingering effects of his past trauma, particularly on his personal relationships and his general sense of well-being. He openly acknowledged the connection between his past trauma and his substance use, saying, “Drugs are associated with trauma, you understand.” Despite the challenges he has faced, he expressed a strong determination to keep moving forward, recognizing that healing is a gradual and ongoing journey.

One significant aspect of his healing journey has been the support of his fiancée, actress Priya Banerjee. Speaking fondly of her influence in his life, he shared, “My fiancée has been helping me improve in many ways. We’re helping each other grow, though she doesn’t need any improvement—she’s perfect!” His warm remarks about their relationship reveal not only his gratitude for Priya’s presence but also the strength he draws from her understanding and support. “That’s life, you know; you have to move on,” he added, expressing a mature perspective on life and love.

In recent years, he has made self-care and recovery a priority, crediting Priya for her unwavering encouragement. The couple announced their engagement earlier this year, and Prateik has frequently expressed his appreciation for the role she plays in his life, especially in his efforts to overcome emotional scars from his past.

On the professional front, Prateik is also experiencing a resurgence in his career. He is currently involved in multiple high-profile projects, including Sikandar, directed by AR Murugadoss and starring Salman Khan, Rashmika Mandanna, and Sathyaraj. Additionally, he will feature in Khwaabon Ka Jhamela, directed by Danish Aslam, signaling his return to the big screen with renewed vigor. These upcoming roles showcase Prateik’s determination to excel in his craft, regardless of the challenges he has encountered.

Prateik’s openness about his past struggles and ongoing recovery reflects a desire to not only heal himself but also inspire others who may be facing similar issues. His journey, supported by both personal resolve and the care of loved ones, exemplifies the resilience required to overcome adversity. As he prepares for the next phase in both his career and personal life, Prateik’s story is a testament to growth, healing, and the strength that can be found even in the most challenging of circumstances.
