The U.S. Mission to India has issued more than one million nonimmigrant visas for the second consecutive year in 2024, a milestone reflecting India’s growing engagement with the United States in tourism, business, and education. With a record number of visitor visas granted, the demand for travel to the U.S. among Indians continues to soar. More than two million Indians visited the U.S.
in the first eleven months of 2024, marking a 26% increase compared to the same period in 2023. This surge underscores the strong bilateral ties between the two nations and the growing aspirations of Indians to explore opportunities in the United States.
Visitor and Nonimmigrant Visas Hit New Highs
India’s appetite for travel to the United States is evident, with over five million Indians already holding nonimmigrant visas. The U.S. Mission processes thousands of visas daily to meet this growing demand.
Among the highlights of 2024 was a pilot program enabling H-1B visa holders to renew their visas within the United States, eliminating the need for international travel. This initiative streamlined the process for thousands of specialty occupation workers and laid the groundwork for a permanent U.S.-based renewal program set to launch in 2025.
In addition to nonimmigrant visas, the Mission issued tens of thousands of immigrant visas, facilitating family reunifications and enabling skilled professionals to become permanent residents. These new permanent residents enrich the vibrant Indian diaspora, already a cornerstone of the U.S.-India relationship.
Strengthening Student and Exchange Programs
India solidified its position as the top sender of international students to the U.S., with more than 331,000 Indian students enrolled in American institutions during the 2024 academic year. For the first time since 2008–2009, India surpassed other nations in sending international students, with graduate student numbers alone rising by 19% to nearly 200,000.
Enhanced Consular Services for Americans and Indians
The U.S. Mission to India has also improved its consular services, issuing more than 24,000 passports and delivering essential services to American citizens living or traveling in India. The launch of a revamped Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) in 2024 enhanced communication during emergencies, ensuring better safety and security for U.S. citizens.
A Strong Bilateral Partnership
The year 2024 saw substantial strides in fostering the U.S.-India partnership. The Mission’s achievements reflect the enduring commitment to strengthening bilateral ties and meeting the needs of citizens on both sides. From advancing visa processes to supporting Indian students and professionals, the collaboration between the two nations remains robust.
Looking Ahead
The U.S. Mission to India’s initiatives in 2024 underscores its dedication to enhancing accessibility and fostering opportunities for Indians. The pilot H-1B visa renewal program and streamlined processes signal a commitment to addressing evolving demands. As bilateral relations grow stronger, these efforts pave the way for deeper cultural, economic, and educational exchanges.
The U.S. Mission to India’s record-breaking year in visa issuance highlights the enduring and dynamic partnership between the two countries. With initiatives aimed at making travel, education, and work opportunities more accessible, the United States and India continue to strengthen their ties, ensuring mutual growth and prosperity in the years to come.
