A 31-year-old man from Thane, Maharashtra, has been booked for allegedly invoking ‘triple talaq’ to divorce his wife, an act that has been illegal in India since 2019. According to an official, the accused, a resident of the Mumbra area, informed his 25-year-old wife’s father on Tuesday that he was ending the marriage through ‘triple talaq.’ His reason: she had gone for a walk alone.
The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019, criminalised the practice of instant divorce, with violators facing potential imprisonment and fines. Following a complaint from the wife, the police registered a First Information Report (FIR) against the man on Wednesday under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Section 351(4) for criminal intimidation and the aforementioned Act.
“A probe is underway,” stated an official. The case highlights the ongoing efforts to enforce laws protecting women’s rights within marriages, particularly in cases involving banned practices like ‘triple talaq.’
This incident serves as a reminder of the legal protections now in place to safeguard Muslim women from such unilateral actions, ensuring accountability under the law.
