India has called for a “peaceful and inclusive Syrian-led political process” following the dramatic turn of events in Syria, where President Bashar al-Assad fled to Russia after Islamist rebels captured Damascus. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) emphasized the importance of unity and inclusivity while confirming that the Indian embassy in Damascus remains operational and in touch with the Indian community for their safety.
In a statement released Monday, the MEA said, “We are monitoring the situation in Syria in the light of ongoing developments. We underline the need for all parties to work towards preserving the unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Syria. We advocate a peaceful and inclusive Syrian-led political process respecting the interests and aspirations of all sections of Syrian society. Our Embassy in Damascus is in contact with the Indian community, for their safety and security.”
The conflict in Syria, which began in 2011, had largely been dormant in recent years, with the Assad regime maintaining control. However, the recent surge in rebel activity resulted in their advance into Damascus, leading to Assad’s departure. The sudden escalation has drawn international attention, including India’s, prompting urgent measures to ensure the safety of Indian nationals in the region.
On Sunday, sources in New Delhi confirmed that the Indian embassy in Damascus continues to operate despite the volatile situation. “The embassy is in touch with all Indian nationals, and they are safe. The embassy remains available to assist Indian nationals in Syria,” a source said.
Amid the crisis, the MEA issued a travel advisory urging Indian nationals to avoid traveling to Syria and advising those currently in the country to take utmost precautions. The advisory stated, “In view of the situation prevailing in Syria, Indian nationals are advised to avoid all travel to Syria until further notification… Those who can, are advised to leave by the earliest available commercial flights, and others are requested to observe utmost precaution about their safety and restrict their movements to the minimum.”
On Friday, the MEA highlighted its close monitoring of the escalating situation in northern Syria. Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal noted that approximately 90 Indian nationals are in Syria, including 14 working with UN organizations. He assured that the Indian mission is maintaining close contact with them to ensure their safety.
India’s stance reflects its commitment to a diplomatic resolution while safeguarding its citizens amid the rapidly evolving Syrian crisis. The emphasis on a Syrian-led political process underscores India’s advocacy for a solution that respects the aspirations of all Syrian people and preserves the country’s sovereignty.
