The Union Home Ministry (MHA) has directed security forces deployed in Manipur to take “necessary steps” to restore order and peace as the state grapples with a “fragile” security situation. Renewed violence erupted last Monday, resulting in the deaths of 11 suspected militants during an exchange of fire with security forces.
The confrontation unfolded in the Jiribam district, where militants allegedly attacked a police station and a nearby Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) camp using sophisticated weapons. The next day, the district witnessed further turmoil as six civilians, including women and children, were abducted by armed militants.
“The security scenario in Manipur has remained fragile for the past few days. Armed miscreants from both communities in conflict have been indulging in violence, leading to the unfortunate loss of lives and disruption in public order,” the Home Ministry stated on Saturday.
Emphasizing the need for immediate action, the ministry reiterated its commitment to taking strict measures against those instigating violence. “The security forces have been directed to take necessary steps to restore order and peace. Strict action would be initiated against anyone trying to indulge in violent and disruptive activities,” it added.
In response to the escalating tensions, the Central government reinstated the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) in six police station jurisdictions, including Jiribam. The act grants extensive powers to the armed forces to address the volatile situation effectively.
The ministry also urged citizens to maintain calm, refrain from believing in rumours, and cooperate with authorities to ensure law and order. “We request the people to maintain peace, not believe in rumours, and cooperate with the security forces,” the statement read.
The MHA’s decision to hand over critical cases to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) reflects its intent to expedite investigations and hold perpetrators accountable. The ministry’s actions come as part of broader efforts to stabilize the state, which has witnessed ongoing unrest due to community conflicts.
This directive highlights the Centre’s commitment to addressing the root causes of violence and ensuring the safety of Manipur’s citizens.
