Tirupati Laddu Controversy: Temple Undergoes Ritual Cleansing Amid Allegations of Animal Fat Use

The Sri Venkateswara Swami temple in Tirumala, one of the holiest shrines for Hindus, has found itself at the center of a controversy regarding the alleged use of animal fats in the preparation of its revered *Tirupati Laddus*. This prasadam, or consecrated offering, has been cherished by millions of devotees, making the allegations particularly unsettling for worshippers. On Monday, the temple underwent “ritualistic sanitation” in an effort to restore the sanctity of the temple and the offerings.

The ritual, known as Shanti Homam Panchagavya Prokshana, was carried out over a four-hour period, from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Monday. This sacred ceremony was performed to propitiate Lord Venkateswara and restore the spiritual sanctity of the laddu prasadam, which is integral to the temple’s offerings. According to J Shyamala Rao, the executive officer of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), the rituals were essential to “ward off the ill effects” from the alleged practices that occurred during the rule of the Jagan Mohan Reddy-led YSRCP government.

This cleansing ritual came after accusations surfaced suggesting that animal fats, including beef tallow, lard, and fish oil, were mixed into the ghee used in preparing the laddus. The allegations were shocking to devotees, as the temple’s offerings are deeply intertwined with Hindu traditions and beliefs that uphold the purity of vegetarianism.

He controversy gained momentum after Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidupublicly accused the previous YSRCP government, led by YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, of allowing animal fats to be mixed into the temple’s laddus. On September 19, Naidu made the allegation that the ghee used in preparing the sacred prasadamwas adulterated during the YSRCP’s administration, sparking outrage and concern among the temple’s devotees and across the country.

In response, Jagan Mohan Reddy, the former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, vehemently denied these claims. He addressed the matter in an eight-page letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing Naidu of spreading falsehoods for political gain. In his letter, Reddy wrote that Naidu had “stooped so low as to hurt the beliefs of crores of people purely for political objectives.” He urged the Prime Minister to intervene, stating that Naidu’s actions were a shameless attempt to spread lies and tarnish the image of the YSRCP government.

“Sir, the entire country looks to you at this crucial juncture. It is very imperative that Mr. Naidu be reprimanded in the severest way for his shameless act of spreading lies and that the truth be brought to light,” Reddy’s letter stated.

Amid the political drama, Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) executive officer J Shyamala Rao confirmed that lab tests had revealed the presence of animal fat in the ghee used in some of the temple’s offerings. According to a report from a Gujarat-based lab, the samples sent by the TTD tested positive for beef tallow, lard, and fish oil. These findings added weight to the accusations and led to a major uproar.

Rao stated that the temple board was in the process of blacklisting the contractor responsible for supplying the adulterated ghee. This move was intended to ensure that such incidents would not be repeated and that the suppliers held accountable would no longer be associated with the temple.

To address the controversy, the Andhra Pradesh government has set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the alleged use of animal fat in the preparation of the sacred Tirupati laddus. This decision came after public outrage over the allegations, with many demanding a thorough probe into the matter. The SIT is expected to investigate the supply chain of the ghee, the contractors involved, and any lapses in the temple’s quality control processes.

The temple administration is committed to full transparency in the investigation. “We are taking these allegations very seriously, and the SIT will leave no stone unturned in determining the truth,” a TTD official said.

The controversy surrounding the Tirupati Laddu strikes at the heart of religious sentiments. The laddus are considered sacred by millions of Hindus and are believed to carry the blessings of Lord Venkateswara himself. For many devotees, the idea that these offerings might have been tainted with non-vegetarian products is deeply disturbing.
