However, the absence of the Congress and other like-minded opposition parties stirred controversy. Led by the Congress, a total of 20 parties decided to boycott the ceremony, citing concerns over the protocol of the event. Their primary objection centered around the decision to have Prime Minister Narendra Modi, rather than President Droupadi Murmu, inaugurate the new Parliament building. According to the opposition parties, as the head of state, the President should have been accorded the honor of inaugurating the facility. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), in response, dismissed the allegations of disrespect. They clarified that the choice of the Prime Minister to perform the inauguration was in line with the ceremonial procedure and not intended as a disregard for the President’s position. The BJP reiterated its commitment to the ideals of democracy and emphasised that the event aimed to celebrate the strength of India’s democratic institutions of BJP.

While political divisions marked the absence of some parties, the presence of others showcased a vibrant and inclusive gathering. Notably, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Shiv Sena (UBT), Samajwadi Party (SP), Communist Party of India (CPI), Communist Party of India (Marxist), Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), Kerala Congress (Mani), Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD), Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD).

Trinamool Congress (TMC), Janata Dal (United), Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), National Conference (NC), Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP), Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), and Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) all played an active role in the event. Their presence underscored the spirit of inclusivity and the shared goal of strengthening democratic values.

The ceremony was attended by a significant number of Members of Parliament (MPs) from both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha. Out of the 539 members in the Lok Sabha, 382 were present to witness this historic event, with an overwhelming majority of 301 members belonging to the BJP. The Rajya Sabha, with its 238-seat composition, had 131 members in attendance, including 93 from the BJP alone.

These numbers also included five nominated members, namely Ranjan Gogoi, the former Chief Justice of India, PT Usha, a retired athletics legend, Ilaiyaraaja, a legendary musician, Dharmasthala Veerendra Heggade, a renowned philanthropist, and V Vijayendra Prasad, a noted film director-screenwriter.
