Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI)
Jamia Millia Islamia is a university originally stated in Aligarh in India in 1920 and got declared Central University by an act of the Indian Parliament in 1988. Jamia means ‘University’ and Millia means ‘National’ in Urdu.
The story of its growth from a small institute to become a central university offering consolidated education from nursery to research in specialized areas in Delhi is worth knowing.
They “built up the Jamia Millia stone by stone and sacrifice by sacrifice,” said Sarojini Naidu, the nightingale of India.
Last year JMI’s VC Nazma Akhtar signed an academic collaboration with Flager College in Florida, USA. This collaboration was signed to strongly bind its engagement with diversity, citizenry, and democracy.
The VC was invited by John Kenan, Professor of Liberal Education and History to discuss the collaborative partnership that would be beneficial for the international setting of students from Florida. The meeting was also attended by Mukesh Ranjan, Director, and International Relations who coordinated the visit on behalf of the institution.
How JMI’s collaboration with Flager College will strengthen education?
- The Flager College in Florida offers education through challenging inclusive and supportive communities to integrate with flourishing culture and history.
- It keeps in mind the JMI’s vision and mission and promotes intellectual, social and personal transformation.
Nazma aims to benchmark the JMI’s teaching and research process by developing sustainable collaborations with foreign universities but would agree to the collaborations only after understanding the idea of best international practices.
