There were fierce protests in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh on Friday against the Citizenship Amendment Act. Violence erupted during demonstrations in 20 districts of Uttar Pradesh. During the firing in Firozabad and Meerut, 2 people died due to firing. 8 people were injured in Kanpur and 4 in Bijnor. The day-long protest in the Jama Masjid area of Delhi was peaceful. But, in the evening, the protesters threw stones at the police and opened fire.
After the violence on Thursday, an FIR has been registered against 8,000 people in Gujarat. Internet service is closed in 20 districts in Uttar Pradesh. Section 144 has been imposed in Delhi, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh. High alert has been issued in 4 districts of Kerala. Mobile internet has also been stopped in Madhya Pradesh.
Situation in states after fierce protest
Uttar Pradesh
Protesters pelted stones at police in Ghaziabad, Meerut, Sultanpur, Gorakhpur, Kanpur, Unnao, Bulandshahar, Hathras, Hapur, Amroha, Muzaffarnagar, Sitapur, Bijnor, Moradabad, Firozabad, Bhadohi, Varanasi, Bahraich, Sambhal and Varanasi on Friday. Police retaliated with tear gas shells.
Despite the implementation of Section 144 in the state, there were violent protests in Lucknow and Sambhal on Thursday against the citizenship law. Police registered 7 cases in Lucknow and arrested 200 protesters. The postmortem of the youth killed in the firing was videographed.
In Sambhal district, cases have been registered on 17 including SP MP Shafiqur Rahman Burke in connection with violence and arson.
A total of 3305 people have been detained in the state so far. Mobile internet is at a standstill in 20 districts including Lucknow. The administration has tightened security arrangements due to the Jumu’ah Namaz.
Delhi
A large crowd gathered outside Jama Masjid after the Jumu’ah prayers. Police monitored through drones and appealed to the people to leave peacefully.
Security arrangements have been tightened in northeast Delhi. On Friday, the police enforced section 144 in 12 out of 14 police station areas and took out a flag march. 10 companies of CRPF and Rapid Action Force have been deployed in Northeast Delhi. 5 drones with high security cameras are monitoring the situation.
In view of the demonstration, DMRC closed 6 metro stations.
Gujarat
Crowd pelted stones at police in Hathikhana and Phetupura areas. ACP Bharat Rathore was injured in stone pelting. Police said that during the Shukwari Bazaar in Hathikhana, videography was being done to monitor the crowd. Some people started throwing stones, objecting to the videography being done from the point of view of law and order. This was followed by stone pelting in Phetupura.
Protesters pelted stones at policemen on Thursday in Shah Alam area of Ahmedabad. 21 policemen including a DCP, an ACP were injured in this attack. In the matter, a police case has been registered against 5 thousand people in Isanpur police station, in which sections like conspiracy to murder, interupting in government work were imposed. On Friday, 49 people were arrested, including Congress councilor Shahzad Khan. Sources told Swarnim Times that the Ahmedabad Police had ignored the Intelligence Bureau’s warning of inciting violence.
On Thursday, a police car was attacked by a mob on the main highway of Banaskantha. A case has been registered against 3022 protesters in this matter. Of these, 22 have been identified. The mob pelted stones at the police in Vadodara. During this time an officer was injured.
Karnataka
Internet will be closed in Mangalore and Dakshina Kannada district till 10 pm on 21 December. School-colleges in Bangalore have been closed. Bus service in Mangalore has been stopped. Section 144 in the city has now been extended till 22 December. Protesters set fire to the police station in Mangalore on Thursday. 20 policemen were injured in the stone pelting. 2 people were killed in police firing. Meanwhile, 24 people have been arrested in Bengaluru for demonstrations and violence.
Bihar
RJD has called a shutdown in the state on Saturday against the citizenship law. Tejashwi Yadav said that this law is unconstitutional and anti-humanism. This has revealed the divisive character of the BJP. CPI-M workers blocked railway tracks and highways in several districts of the state during the bandh on Thursday.
Assam
Internet service was restored in all districts on Friday. The internet was banned from December 11 due to protests and violence here.
Tamil Nadu
A case was registered against 600 people who protested against the citizenship law in Chennai. These include actor Siddharth and musician TM Krishna.
Kerala
North Kerala is on high alert. Security arrangements have been strengthened in Wayanad, Kozhikode, Kasaragod and Kannur districts.
West Bengal
Things were normal in the state on Friday. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today staged a protest in Kolkata’s minority-dominated Park Circus area.
