President Dési Bouterse jailed for 20 years, killed 15 including journalists and lawyers 37 years ago.

Suriname President Dési Bouterse has been sentenced to 20 years in prison in a 37-year-old case. Paramaribo's Court has found Dési Bouterse guilty of shooting 15 people, including lawyers, journalists, and opposition's union leaders, in 1982. He is currently on an official visit to China. Dési Bouterse has two weeks to appeal against the sentence.

All four accused sent to judicial custody for 14 days, demand from protesters – hang them

The four accused in the rape and murder of a 26-year-old Veterinary doctor in Ranga Reddy district of Telangana were remanded to 14 days judicial custody by the court. Following the fast track court order on Saturday, the accused were taken from Channaguda jail to Chanchalguda jail. There is outrage across the country since this incident. On Saturday, people demonstrated outside the Shadnagar police station in Hyderabad. Some people even demanded to hang the accused without trial or to do an encounter. The local bar association refused to defend the accused.

BJP stages a walkout in the floor test in Maharashtra

In a small extension to the drama that underwent in Maharashtra last week, the Bhartiya Janta Party staged a walkout today in the first session of the Parliament. BJP is the single largest party in the state with a total of 105 MLAs in the assembly. The main reason for the walkout as painted by the BJP was that it is being conducted in an ‘unlawful manner’, indicating towards the swearing-in of the ministers and the convening of the house session. Despite the uproar in the Parliament, the Maha Vikas Aghadi front led by Uddhav Thackrey comfortably sailed in the floor test with a total of 169 votes in their favour. The BJP has 105 MLAs in the assembly saying a post-poll alliance as entered into by the three parties is nothing but unlawful.

Center approaches SC to disband the two-member SIT in the 1984 Sikh Riots

In a freshly arising matter arising out of the Supreme Court, the Centre has approached with an application seeking permission to disband a special investigation team (SIT) in the 1984 Sikh riots. The SIT is headed by a former Delhi High Court judge S.N. Dhingra and comprised of retired IPS officer Rajdeep Singh and serving IPS officer Abhishek Dular (2006). The committee was set up by order of the Supreme Court on January 11, 2018, entrusted to supervise the further investigation in these cases, were the closure reports were already filed. However, later on, Singh cited ‘personal grounds’ to excuse him from the membership of the said SIT, and thus now the SIT has only two members.
